Forklift Seat Belts

Seat Belts for Forklift - This guideline purpose is to be able to explain the Regulation requirements for the use of driver seatbelts or restraints on forklifts. It is the employers' liability to be able to make certain that each and every machine, piece of equipment and tool inside the workplace is chosen and used rightly and operated according to the manufacturer's directions.

Rough Terrain lift trucks must meet the guidelines of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992 with regards to their design, maintenance, inspection, fabrication and use.

Side boom tractors and mobile machinery along with a Rollover Protective Structure, or ROPS for short, should include seat belts which meet the requirements of the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If any mobile machinery has seat belts required by law, the driver and subsequent passengers need to make sure they utilize the belts whenever the motor vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation for the reason that this could cause the machine to become unbalanced and therefore, unsafe.

If a seat belt or various operator restraint is needed on a lift truck.

While working a lift truck, the seat belt requirements will depend on several factors. Contributing factors to this determination may include whether the the lift truck is equipped along with a Rollover Protective Structure, the type of forklift itself and the year the lift truck was manufactured. The manufacturer's directions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.

With regards to powered industrial forklifts, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 refers to an operator restraint device, enclosure or system. A driver restraint device, system, or enclosure is designed in order to assist the driver in lowering the danger of entrapment of the torso and/or head between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The restraint device or system might comprise a seat belt, even if a seat belt is not essentially a part of such equipment or system.
